Why is so much supportive housing in B.C. empty?

Nearly 1,700 units of supportive housing funded by the province had been left unoccupied for an average of nearly 21 months, according to provincial data uncovered by an FOI request.

The revelation — which comes in the middle of an affordability crisis and rising homelessness — has one advocate saying, “It doesn’t make any sense.”

The count was conducted by BC Housing in March 2025, covering provincially funded supportive housing projects in and around the Greater Vancouver area.
